Basingstoke Canal Angling Association

21st August 2008.

Member Tony Etherington catches what must be the biggest Crucian Carp ever caught on the canal.

I was fishing on the canal at Great Bottom Flash in Ash Vale.  It had been a quiet morning until about 11:30, and then I had a few bream, a tench, a small crucian of 1lb 14oz. Soon afterwards I was stuck into the big one!

I’ve caught many large crucians in the past, my previous best being 3lb 12oz, but this one just hammered that!

It was extra special to me because it came from the canal which I have been fishing for over 40 years.

I weighed the fish 3 times to make sure I wasn’t dreaming!

It was an amazing 4lb and 8ozs.

( Note From BCAA Secretary – The British Record for a Crucian is held by Martin Bowler, who caught a 4lb 9oz Crucian at RMC Yateley in 2003).

All fish were caught on the pole at about 6 metres using very light tackle, over a bed of groundbait.

Both crucians were caught on sweetcorn.

As you can see in the first picture it was a pleasant sunny day.

Regards

Tony Etherington.
